6/17/2023 0 Comments Themaker atelierThe Pattern Chapters One to Eight follow the same format. The book suggests blending sizes where necessary and making a mock up or wearable toile, but little else about fitting. The largest size is size 8 – for someone sized bust 46″, waist 39″, hips 49″! The smallest is size 1 for a 32″ bust. These charts are super important, because it doesn’t correspond to any size chart I’ve seen. One chart is for the fitted garments, like the pencil skirt, the other chart is for the relaxed fit patterns, like the drape front top. One sidebar illustrates where to measure for bust waist and hips, another on the second page offers sewing tips including the standard seam size for these patterns (1 cm or 3/8 in). Measuring, Making a toile and fitting a garment is just two pages long. A sidebar notes the importance of preparing the fabric. They are shown combined with other garments from the book (ie, Pencil Skirt with Drape Front Top) so you can see how they work together to form a cohesive wardrobe.Ĭhoosing and Using Fabrics is just a couple of pages briefly explaining what wovens, stretch wovens, knits, technical fabrics, fine silk fabrics, and leather are, and offers a few tips for handling each. The pattern chapters are nicely illustrated with clear photos featuring the garments made up in at least 4 different fabrics, worn on different people. Measuring, making a toile and fitting a garment The examples are made up in a range of fabrics, mostly neutrals and solids to emphasize the mix-n-match nature of the patterns. Each item in the collection is shown in both the original basic form and variations. Patterns for other designs are available on their website. They reflect the style and essence of The Maker’s Atelier other designs. These patterns rely on a loose boxy shape or stretch fabric for a good fit. There are no fitting instructions beyond the advice to blend sizes and make a mock up. Advanced or enhanced methods are sometimes mentioned but not explained. But I recommend keeping a good reference book (or Youtube) handy, because the instructions are clear, but basic. This puts these patterns within reach of most beginning sewists. Even not-so-fussy details, like darts and cuffs, are often omitted. The designs are basic with no fussy details. These patterns are simple, with classic, stylish lines and sometimes just a little twist. The best part is that the cover wraps back on itself, forming a self-sealing envelope like enclousre. The hardbound book has a large pocket for the pattern pieces, and the text section is attached to the cover, the last page of the index is actually printed on the inside of the cover. Together, these patterns form a complete wardrobe, including a bag, that will work for almost any situation from fairly dressy to casual chic, so they are called The Essential Collection. The core of this book and pattern set is eight patterns from The Maker’s Atelier. The Maker’s Atelier – The Essential Collection
